Close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you – can you recognise any of them?

Sounds play a major role in our natural landscape, even though we are not always receptive enough to hear them, let alone recognise them.

Sitting quietly, listening to the language of nature around us, calms us and deepens our appreciation for the life around us, and is an excellent and fun way to explore the outdoors.

BENEFITS OF NATURE SOUNDS

Sounds such as running water, whether in a river, a waterfall or when rain falls, as well as the chirping of birds, help reduce pain, stress, and serve to improve mood and cognitive performance. (Article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)

This type of activity is very effective at calming and focusing, enabling participants to have an intense personal experience in Nature.

It has a lasting positive impact on observational skills in the outdoors.

This activity supports in practicing reflection.

This activity supports multimodal learning and sensory learning.

Participants often say the sound mapping helps them slow down and pay attention to the detail around them, and give them a better sense of the wider place – for example, pick up the sounds of a road and a train far away.
